GUIDED SELF HELP WORKBOOK FOR EATING DIFFICULTIES

This is an evidenced based guided self-help workbook for eating difficulties designed to be delivered by regular face-to-face or online sessions with a trained guide. It incorporates the therapeutic modalities of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectic Behavioural therapy (DBT). It is part of the recommendations from NICE guidelines for treating binge-eating disorder (section 1.4.2) and bulimia nervosa (depending on severity of symptoms). It is accessible to all adolescents aged 16+ and adults.

How this package helps you:

  • Develop an understanding why you have difficulties with eating.

  • Learn more about yourself by challenging interpersonal difficulties, low self-esteem and mood intolerance.

  • Raise awareness of thoughts, feelings and behaviours around food.

  • Gain practical skills and techniques to tackle the disordered eating behaviours.

  • Have a space to explore how you can recover and maintain this.

This treatment option may be particularly valuable for individuals who struggle with ambivalence to make behavioural changes around their eating but would still like to spend time understanding their relationship with food better, raise awareness, and subsequently make a more informed decision around what steps they would like to take next. We often find that by taking the aligned action and committing to guided self-help sessions can help you connect with that part of you that deeply desires to become free from limiting beliefs around food and body image and can be one big step towards the direction of recovery.

This Guided Self-Help Package includes:

Session 1

What are eating disorders?

Session 4

Negative thoughts: Identifying & challenging

Session 2

Physical and psychological health

Session 5

Learning to feel good about you

Session 3

Food and health & unwanted behaviours

Session 6

Relapse prevention: planning for the future

Measures of therapeutic alliance and eating disorders behaviours and psychopathology have been built into the workbook, as they can help both you and your guide to track markers of improvement in your desired outcomes. These measures are also used in NHS and other health services and include EDEQ, PHq9 and GAD7. The measures of therapeutic alliance explore how well the participant was engaged with the materials and the guide. They offer feedback to the guide which allows them to address issues that may interfere with therapy.

Please note that the Dietetic Assessment session needs to be completed prior to this package being purchased. The dietetic assessment will define whether you meet all the criteria for guided self-help versus individualised dietetic sessions.
